We asked local singer/song writer, Matt Cross, which 10 songs have influenced him as a musician:

1. Billy Joel – “Piano Man”

“Our family was raised listening to Billy Joel, so this song holds much nostalgia for me. The chord progression and melody is simple but sweet, and the fact that Billy wrote the lyrics on true events makes it extremely organic.”

2. “Falling Slowly” – Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

“For me, its the blend of the vocal harmonies in the chorus that makes this song special. The boy/girl duo has had a very strong influence on the sound of my original group “My Friend Rupert”.”

3. “Rockin The Suburbs” – Ben Folds

“This may not be my favourite Ben Folds song, or even the most influential to my playing, but it is the first song I heard by Ben which lead me to be influenced by all of his work. The quirky lyrics, and well produced sound makes it a perfect pop song.”

4. “White Wine In The Sun” – Tim Minchin

“A beautiful and sentimental song. With subtle detours into his genius wordplay and border-line idioms, Tim managers to deliver the true meaning of Christmas, through tasteful chords and flowing melodies.”

5. “Rainbow Connection” – Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher

“Performed by Kermit the Frog, the melody is what stands out for me. I give great praise to the composers for being able to write a song that gives so much life to a puppet.”

6. “Love” – Adam Miller

“An instrumental tune written by Newcastle guitarist, this song (and album) has strongly influenced my electric guitar playing. Adam has a fine way of creating a tasteful solo without the need of hitting too many notes.”

7. “Southern Cross Tattoo” – Kate Miller-Heidke

“Catchy and fun, this song has had an influence on some of my more comedic songs. Kate has a clever way of contrasting her sweet innocent voice and persona, with quirky (and sometimes slightly absurd) lyrics.”

8. “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” – Billy Joel

“This 7 and a half minute song is a journey. Starting with just piano and vocals, the arrangement builds and progresses through different styles, until finally breaking it back down again. I guess the biggest influence here would be the way that Billy is able to capture different themes through arrangement and instrumentation.”

9. “Poison and Wine” – The Civil Wars

“Another beautiful duet that has heavily influenced “My Friend Rupert”. The call and response of the male and female vocals creates a suspenseful verse, resolving with the harmonies in the chorus.”

10. “My Way” – Frank Sinatra

“A powerful ballad. I suppose the lyrical content outlines how much of a control freak I can be when it comes to music haha. Although slightly cheesy, the iconic melody and strong arrangement gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
